Al Nakba: The Untold Story of Palestine’s Heartbreak

A split image depicting the before and after of Al Nakba: a peaceful Palestinian village contrasted with its war-torn state, symbolizing the Palestinian struggle.

In 1948, a big event called Al Nakba shook the Middle East. Palestine was split into two parts. This forced 750,000 Palestinians to leave their homes. The world sees this as history. But Palestinians call it Al Nakba – the disaster.

Napoleon’s Idea and British Influence

This conflict started long ago. In 1799, France thought of making a Jewish country in the Middle East under its control. The British liked this idea after World War I. When the Ottoman Empire fell, Britain took control of Palestine.

Zionism Grows

The British government worked with Zionists – Jews who wanted their own country based on religion. In 1917, they said they would support a Jewish homeland in Palestine. This was a win for Zionism. As more Jewish people moved to Palestine, problems grew.

Palestinians Start to Fight Back

As Palestinians lost their homes and faced violence, they began to resist. A Syrian leader, Al Qassam, called for a revolution. He fought against Israeli and British forces. He died fighting, but his ideas lived on.

Fighting Two Enemies

Palestinians had to fight two strong enemies: the British army and Zionist military. Even though it was hard, they kept fighting. This made the British limit Jewish immigration, which angered Zionists.

The UN’s Plan to Split Palestine

In 1947, the United Nations wanted to split Palestine into two countries. This plan gave 55% of the land to the Jewish minority, making Palestinians angry. Unlike other colonized people, Palestinians didn’t accept this unfair decision quietly.

Violence and Forcing People Out

Zionist forces tried harder to control Palestine. They took over villages, killed many people, and forced families to leave. In April 1948, they took two big Palestinian cities: Haifa and Jaffa.

Israel Becomes a Country

When British rule ended, Israel said it was a new country. The US and Soviet Union quickly said they accepted this new nation. Palestinians went to sleep in their country and woke up without one.

The Fight Goes On and the UN Tries to Help

Even after becoming a country, Zionist forces kept taking more land. The UN tried to make peace, but failed. A Swedish diplomat was killed. By 1948, 750,000 Palestinians had no homes, and 13,000 had been killed.

The Final Split of Land

In 1949, Israel joined the UN. A new split gave Israel 78% of Palestine. Palestinians were left with only the Gaza Strip and West Bank – just 22% of their original land.

Keeping Palestinian History Alive

The fight isn’t just about land. It’s about keeping Palestinian history and identity alive. Some say Palestine never existed. But Palestinians keep fighting, trying to make sure people remember their past and present.
